File Name Extension

File Extension merupakan nama akhiran dalam sesebuah nama fail. Biasanya 3 karektor atau lebih yang dikira selepas tanda titik. File Extension ini diberi secara otomatik oleh perisian (program) yang menghasilkan file tersebut.

Contoh gambar dibawah, file yang bernama "sample.mpg", 'sample' ialah nama fail manakala 'mpg' ialah file extension.

Bagaimana Melihat File Extension

• Open Folder
• klik Tool
• Folder Option
• tab View (scroll bawah sikit)
• uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
  

Berikut ialah contoh file extension yang agak popular mengikut kategori;

Dokumen:

.doc ialah Microsoft Word 97-2003 document file.

.docx ialah dokumen Microsoft Word 2007/2010 Open XML document file.

.xls : Microsoft Excel 97 to 2003 workbook file.

.xlsx : Microsoft Excel 2007/2010 Open XML workbook file.

.ppt : Microsoft PowerPoint 97 to 2003 Presentation file.

.pptx : Microsoft PowerPoint 2007/2010 Open XML presentation file

.pdf ialah Portable document format.

.odt ialah OpenOffice.org Writer text document.

.txt ialah Common simple plain text file.

.png : Portable Network Graphic.

.gif : Graphics interchange file format.

Movie:

.avi : Audio Video Interleave movie.

.mpg atau .mpeg : MPEG 1 video file format. (Moving Photographic ExpertsGroup).

.mkv : Matroska video-audio multimedia file.

.flv : Flash video file.

.rm atau .rmvb :  RealMedia variable bitrate file.

.3gp : Multimedia files for wireless networks. (thirdgeneration platform).

.srt : Movie subtitle file format (SubRip format)
